469.7 Megapixel Photograph of Foellinger Auditorium
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Since I commonly take panoramas, I decided to try doing a larger than normal panorama (just for fun). This panorama is comprised of 100 individual photographs (5 rows by 20 columns). Combined, they form an image that is 30,700 by 15,300 pixels. That is 469.71 megapixels, or just under half a gigapixel. If this photo was printed at 150 pixels per inch, it would be about 204 by 102 inches (or approx. 17 by 8.5 feet).

If you are unfamiliar with this building, it is Foellinger Auditorium. This building is located at the south end of the main quad at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). If you have never been to the UIUC campus and yet this building seems familiar to you, perhaps you remember it from the movie "With Honors."

If you would like to see a larger version of this photo, just click on the photo above. I've scaled down the original to 25% in each dimension (width and height). I did this because: (1) the JPEG format cannot be used to save such a large image, and (2) to save bandwith and disk space on the server. The full size TIFF is about 802 megabytes (i.e. an entire CD-R) and would take quite some time to download. Regardless, the reduced version of the photo is still approx. 24 megabytes using the JPEG format, so if you decide to take a look, remember be patient. A 50% version is here (80 megabytes) if you want to see a slighly larger version. If you really want to see the full-sized original, you'll have to contact me.
